AS WE WERE

The Story of Old Elizabethtown

Elizabethtown was the first English settlement in New Jersey. During the Revolution, Elizabethtown was constantly an outpost sustaining raid after raid from vengeful Loyalists on Staten Island. An unusually large proportion of the Continental offices of the New Jersey line came from Elizabethtown…
After the Revolution, Elizabethtown was the haven for many distinguished French refugees. It was also the leading Federalist town in New Jersey, supporting Washington and Hamilton in the policies which got the new nation running smoothly. Later the bitter steamboat dispute which ended in the famous case of Gibbons vs Ogden was enacted in Elizabethtown. Colorful and dramatic, the story of old Elizabethtown will appeal to all readers.-Goodreads
